Kartell Masters Chair

The addition of a modern chair within a room can instantly improve the existing decor and elevate the room’s style. Everything in the room can look a little more luxe when styled beside an iconic piece.

The French designer Philippe Starck is a postmodern master and one of the most influential designers of modern times. He has designed a vast array of innovative pieces from furniture to lemon squeezers, to the interiors of restaurants and superyachts.

Starck created the Master Chair Kartell with the help of designer Eugeni Quitllet. Starck’s vision was to weave together three chairs by midcentury masters - Charles and Ray Eames Eiffel chair, Eero Saarinen’s Tulip chair and Arne Jacobsen’s Series 7 chair.

Starck explained: ‘We weren’t born just today. There have been masters before us. The Masters Chair brings to mind the lines of three great masters and three great masterpieces. Putting them all together they create a new product, a new project, a reflection on a new society.’

Also reflecting the loops of the classical Thonet bentwood chairs, instantly recognisable from a Paris cafe, Starck noted that the Master Chair Kartell has ‘historical lines [which] overlie each other and intersect to finally yield an organic design closest to our body today.’ Not only does this give the chair an elegant silhouette, but it also makes it incredibly comfortable to sit on as it moulds to the body. The super strong polypropylene allows for this moulding with no awkward and uncomfortable screws and bolts.

The Master Chair Kartell is available in a variety of colours adding to its ability to catch the eye as you walk into a room - this is a really statement piece. For a dramatic look, there is even a metallic finish that became available from 2015.

As well as looking striking, the chair is also highly practical as it can be used indoors or outdoors, it can be wiped clean and easily stacked and stored away.

It is no surprise that this chair was honoured with the prestigious ‘2010 Good Design Award’ presented by the 2013 Red Dot Design Award and the Chicago Athenaeum - Museum of Architecture and Design.
