Muuto Lights

Muuto was founded in 2008 by two young designers, Kristian Byrne and Peter Bonnen, with the aim to develop traditional Scandinavian design with a new and original vision.

They did so by recruiting Nordic designers such as Norway Says, Ole Jensen and Louise Campbell, then giving them the complete freedom to use their imagination and intuition in their designs. This recipe for design success has resulted in everyday objects in the home becoming works of art - items that are to be admired as well as being functional.

The expression ‘muuto’ is Finnish and means ‘opening up to new perspectives’. The Muuto lighting range demonstrates this concept, with designers using a surprising choice of materials such as a Muuto table light made solely from wood or a pendant lampshade made from rubber.

Designed by Andreas Bergsaker,  the Muuto Focus table lamp has an ash wood body, where the grains of the wood are very much part of the look and feel of the Muuto light. The dish-like base allows for small items to be placed on it for safekeeping, making the Muuto table light ideal for use on a bedside table or shelf.

Another new perspective that Muuto lighting presents is reducing design to the essence of its purpose. Swedish designer Jens Fager created a work of art in a stripped down Muuto table light featuring a minimal frame made from powder-coated aluminium to give a smooth, clean look. Named the Muuto Tip table light as the head of the lampshade gently tips back to give a better dispersion of light, this has quickly become a design classic.
