Artek Desks and Shelving

Artek was founded in 1935 by four design pioneers - architect Alvar Aalto, his wife Aino, art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl and arts promoter Marie Gullichsen. The group chose the neologism ‘Artek’ for the name to combine art and technology. This reflected the Bauhaus movement in their admiration for technical expertise with quality materials.

Originally, the aim was to promote furniture and glassware designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto. After Alvar Aalto passed away in 1976, the company began to sell designs by other Finnish designers who were aligned to Artek’s core values.

For example, the Artek Kaari shelf collection by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Artek was launched at the Stockholm Furniture fair in 2015. These Artek shelves combine traditional Artek materials in a new and innovative way. This Artek shelving comprises various large wall-mounted shelves, rectangular and round tables, a desk, a wall console and a small round shelf.

The Bouroullec brothers continued the Artek tradition:

‘From the beginning we had the idea to make a collection in link with the Artek tradition but from our contemporary stance. We continued our exploration around the combination of materials and created Kaari, a novel construction system resulting of a hybridization of solid wood and steel bands’.

The Artek REB 009 Kaari shelf  is coated with melamine/ linoleum yet the wall brackets are solid natural oak.

The Artek REB 010 Kaari shelf with desk also comprises a desk within the design. The Artek REB 007 Kaari shelf features a stylish round panel with linoleum surface and solid natural oak wall brackets.
